CHICO NUTS 2011 CALIFORNIA STATE AMERICAN LEGION CHAMPIONS

California kings: Nuts claim state crown

By NICK WILSON-Sports Writer

YOUNTVILLE — Though the Chico Nuts have had plenty of successful seasons, none have surpassed this one.

In the same year that brought coach Tom Stevens his 500th victory and the team's first Area 1 championship, the Nuts reached one more major milestone Tuesday in what has already been an impressive season.

In the championship contest of the American Legion State Tournament, Chico captured the California crown with a convincing 11-4 victory over San Mateo at Cleve Borman Field.

Chico emerged victorious by virtue of a late seven-run rally and a powerful performance from Luke Barker, who earned his 22nd win as a Chico Nut, tying Nick Bryant's mark as the program's all-time leader.

"It's amazing because we just feel like we've been working to reach this point since we first put the Nuts' uniform on," Barker said. "For Tom and all the Nuts guys that couldn't get through the Area tournament, it's amazing. As far as the wins record, it's great. I've been on the Nuts for awhile, so to get to that is awesome. But any of us would trade that for what we just got today."

For Stevens, the championship was significant not just to the 2011 team, but every one that came before it.

"It's been such a great season and such an incredible ride," he said. "They deserve it. Our whole program deserves it. We win not just for these guys, but for all of those guys that have gotten to a championship game and have lost or been on the bad end of things. It's for all the guys over15 years: Tyson Cross, Kyle Lohse, Evan MacLane, Nick Bryant. We won today for all those guys too."

While the final score suggests a lopsided contest in Chico's favor, the Nuts went into the bottom of the eighth tied at 4. The Shockers closed a three-run deficit in the top of that inning when Kyle Ferris, who went 2 for 4, sparked the San Mateo offense with an opposite-field single to right. Once the Shockers plated two runs, they were within one of tying the game with no outs and the bases loaded.

It was then that Barker came on in relief, giving up one unearned run while retiring the next three batters to end the threat. In his two innings on the mound, he would strike out two batters and give up just one hit.

"We got into a little trouble there, but my mindframe was just to attack," Barker said. "They were going to be ready, so I needed to be more ready. I had to get into the zone and attack them."

The Chico bats finally came around in the bottom of the eighth, when Zeke Colby capitalized on a bases-loaded scenario by ripping a two-run single up the middle, breaking the 4-4 stalemate to reclaim the lead.

"I walked in there knowing that I had gone 0-for-the game," Colby said. "As I approached the at-bat I just took deep breaths and knew I was going to get a fastball on the first pitch. I just wanted to take it up the middle or opposite field, anywhere that direction. I wanted to score that run."

From there, the Nuts put up five more runs on three walks and three singles from Sean Ryan, Brandon Coborn and Steven Perry.

Ryan finished with a team-best three RBIs, while Barker and Tyler Wells both had three hits apiece.

The Nuts now advance to the Western Regionals in Fairfield, where they will compete against teams from Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Texas.

In 1983, prior to the Nuts, a Chico-based American Legion team went to the American Legion World Series. The Western Regionals marks the farthest that the Chico Nuts team has gone since its establishment in 1996.

"I'm going to keep telling them to be great teammates and keep telling them to enjoy every minute of the experience," Stevens said. "You don't know where it's going to end or where it's going to take you. At this point teams are either hanging on or starting to roll. I feel like we're rolling."

Notes: The Shockers gained entry to the title game after losing to Merced 10-9 in the semifinals, but at the conclusion of the game, successfully argued a call regarding an illegal bat which ultimately gave them the win. In the championship contest, however, San Mateo would not litigate its way to victory. ... San Mateo tested Kyle LaClaire in the top of the third, when with one out, the Chico left-handed pitcher had runners on second and third, but struck out one batter and caught Danny Morales in a rundown between home and third to end the inning. ... Chico second baseman Kurt Laver came up with a key defensive play in the top of the fifth as he fielded a ground ball, tagged the runner heading to second, then threw to first to complete the double play. ... Laver went 2 for 4, and in the bottom of the eighth scored two runs when his grounder down the third-base line ricocheted off a San Mateo fielder's glove. ... One of the most perplexing calls of the game took place in the first inning on an infield base hit from Barker. The first-base umpire initially signaled Barker safe, then out. After the Chico baserunners and San Mateo fielders had cleared the field, the umpires reversed the call, putting Barker back on first.

DUANE KUIPER PACKS EM IN AT SPRING FEVER

Kuiper draws big crowd at Legion fundraiser

By JOSEPH SHUFELBERGER-Sports Writer

CHICO — It was a night for the young and the young at heart — nearly all of them adorned in orange and black — at Friday's Spring Fever dinner and auction fundraiser for Chico American Legion baseball.

"That was so much fun!" 58-year-old Beverly Patrick said to her nephew Anthony Points, showing him a baseball with a fresh signature of the event's featured speaker, one of the voices of the San Francisco Giants, Duane Kuiper.

Patrick, an office manager at Pleasant Valley High School, was excited to add Kuiper's name to a ball she caught at a Giants game that already had signatures of former Giants Matt Williams, Kirk Rueter and Rich Aurilia among others.

Patrick was one of 675 estimated people who packed Manzanita Place to support American Legion baseball and to hear the voice of the Giants, their Giants.

Kuiper noticed.

"I'm really impressed with all the orange tonight. These people may not live a block from the stadium," he said, "but they know as much baseball as those that do."

Kuiper said he had known he'd be at the event since last year's edition, when fellow Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow was the featured speaker.

"My partner called me after he left here last year, and he said, 'You're doing it next year. It's fabulous. We've got some great Giants fans up here,'" Kuiper said. "And I'm pretty good at listening to my road wife just like I'm good at listening to my home wife."

Kuiper signed and posed for photos before dinner and even did some during dinner, making sure everyone had a good time.

He even offered to sign Eli Thomas' jersey shirt in a special way.

"I can sign it Willie Mays, Buster Posey or me," Kuiper said to the 9-year-old. "Which one do you want?"

Thomas chose Kuiper's to pair it with Krukow's signature from last year.

"They're our favorites," said Thomas, and his friend Ty Polosky, 11, who both play for the Chico Aces, another baseball program for younger children.

Kids, though, weren't the only ones enjoying themselves or getting autographs.

"I'm a huge Giants fan," said Doug La Malfa, state senator for the 4th district that includes Chico. "Kruk and Kuipe. They bring a homey feel, pulling you into the game."

La Malfa, like many others, have attended the Spring Fever before.

"I sat next to Will Clark — 'The Thrill' — at the lunch when he was here," La Malfa recalled while holding his signed ball after waiting in line with his son Kyle. "Will's such a down-to-earth guy."

Kuiper kept Friday's audience laughing and applauding of stories from his playing days, his broadcast career with the Giants and with a slideshow of pictures from the team's playoff run that ended in the franchise's first World Series championship since the team moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958.

Kuiper even said he was bidding on some items from the silent auction.

"You wouldn't believe what I bid on — Aubrey Huff's red thong," Kuiper quipped.

While the Giants' infamous good-luck piece from last year's championship season wasn't available, several items were. They included autographed items of Aaron Rodgers, Giants players, other athletes and trips to games and vacation getaways.

Patrick, who also attended to support another nephew, Reggie Points, who plays baseball, was hoping to win a painting of Doryland Field.

"I got a great picture of Joe's Bar before, and sent it to my son-in-law who worked there while he was in college," she said.

The crowd that gathered for the 14th annual Spring Fever pleased Tom Stevens, the director of Chico American Legion baseball and coach of the Chico Nuts.

"This has become more about the community than the speaker anymore," said Stevens, who will be coaching for the 15th year. "This is such a great baseball town."

BARKER WILL COME DOWN FROM STANDS TO TAKE FIELD FOR CHICO STATE

Luke Barker was in his mother’s belly the first time he took in a Chico State baseball game. Next season he’ll be in the cardinal and white. A fixture at Nettleton Stadium since he was “this big,” (insert old lady motioning low to the ground here) Barker, now 6-foot-3, signed a National Letter of Intent to play baseball for the Wildcats Wednesday in a ceremony at Pleasant Valley High School.

Barker, the son of Chico State Athletic Director Anita Barker and Chico State Head Athletic Trainer Scott Barker, chose Chico State over a number of other collegiate baseball programs in Northern California. Performances like he had as a senior at Pleasant Valley this season tend to get that kind of attention.

Barker went 7-2 with a 0.99 ERA and a save while leading the Vikings to a 28-3 record, a No. 22 ranking in the state, and the North Section title this season. The lanky right-hander twirled six complete games, struck out 58, and walked just five in 56-plus innings. He allowed only 30 hits and just three extra-base hits. He also fired a no-hitter on March 9 to outduel Shasta High School’s Dallas Chadwick, who was selected in the 18th round of this year’s draft, and a five-inning no-hitter against cross-town rival Chico High School on April 22.

“It’s definitely a dream come true,” said Barker. “I’ve been a part of the Chico State family my whole life. I’ve watched hundreds of Chico State baseball games in my lifetime. Now I can take the next step and contribute something back. It’s really special. “Some people get caught up in the Division I, Division II thing. But what I looked at when I was deciding where to play was the level of baseball being played. I chose Chico State because the baseball that gets played at Nettleton Stadium is played at a very high level.”

Barker has been playing at a very high level himself. He earned First Team All-Eastern Athletic League honors and an invitational to the Lions All-Star Game following his senior season. And he was the Pitcher of the Year for the Chico Nuts American Legion team last summer, and this summer is 1-0 with a 3.50 ERA through eight innings of work.

When Barker wasn’t on the mound for the Vikings, he was contributing with the bat as the team’s third baseman. He hit .360 with a .558 slugging percentage and 36 RBI in 29 games and notched eight doubles and three home runs in 88 at-bats.

As a junior, Barker went 5-0 with a 2.03 ERA to help led the Vikings to a 27-5 record and the Northern Section title. In 35 innings of work, Barker fanned 28, walked four, and allowed 35 hits.

“Luke’s been on our radar for a few years now. He’s gotten bigger and stronger to put himself in a position to play at a high level,” said Chico State Head Coach Dave Taylor. “His ability to locate on both halves on the plate with his fastball and throw his off-speed pitches in fastball counts is impressive. He’s the type of guy we’ve won with in the past and we plan to win with in the future. We’re really excited about his future here.

“The nice thing for us is that, not only can we see the talent and know he can compete at this level, but he’s a known quantity in terms of his make up. We know Luke has intangibles that are hard to find in terms of his character and work ethic. We also know that he understands what it takes to compete and succeed at the national level since I’ve been seeing him at the yard since he was four years old.”

One moment in all of those years left an especially lasting impression on Barker.

“There’s a long list of memories but I remember one specifically,” said Barker. “I don’t remember what year it was but (Chico State all-time home run leader) Rich Gregory was still playing. I remember him coming up into the stands after the game and giving me a baseball. I didn’t let go of it for a week.”

Now he can do the same for someone else.

KYLE LOHSE COMES BACK TO CARDINALS ROTATION
Chico American Legion Baseball alumni has re-signed with the St Louis Cardinals , signing a four year contract to be part of their pitching rotation.

Lohse was 15-6 with a 3.78 ERA this season and led the staff with 200 innings. He agreed to a $4.25 million, one-year contract on March 14. His new deal contract calls for a $1.25 million signing bonus and salaries of $7,125,000 next year, $8,875,000 in 2009 and $11,875,000 in each of the final two seasons. He also gets a full no-trade clause.

Lohse said he was able to remain more consistent this season in part because of better preparation under pitching coach Dave Duncan and manager Tony La Russa. "I've had pretty good runs in the past but I'd have a couple of games where it skewed the numbers a little bit," he said.

"He really became the glue of what we needed to have happen," general manager John Mozeliak said at a news conference.

Congratulations Kyle!
